Gloria Essien She/Her

Gloria is an incoming medical student, newly planted in the greater Chicago area. Her journey to medicine has been an interesting one: much of her studies and research are rooted in mindfulness-based approaches to clinical care, alongside other aspects of complementary and alternative medicine practices. She graduated from Brown University in 2017 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Contemplative Studies, a concentration that looks at the intersection of meditative practices, religious studies, and neuroscience. She values her spirituality because of the positive impact it has on her sense of empathy and compassion. Her love for birth work started at a young age as she watched her own mother care for immigrant mothers during their postpartum months by teaching them how to bathe and massage infants, massage their C-section scars and cook nourishing meals. Her passion developed as she learned more about the impact of doulas and midwives on women’s birth experiences. She believes labor, birth, and postpartum to be sacred, intimate journeys, and she is so grateful to be able to support birthing people as they breathe through them.

Outside of Birthways, Gloria supports families throughout the Chicago area as a part-time nanny for babies and toddlers. She loves sunshine, beaches, and playing her brother’s guitar.

In their own words

“I doula because I am passionate about supporting families — especially new parents — as they navigate their transition to parenthood. I doula to help birthing people feel seen, heard, and understood, and to support them as they tap into their power of confidence and choice throughout their birthing experiences.”
